A delegation of twelve navy, coast guard, and security officers from seven countries, including Fiji, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Malawi, Maldives, Togo, and Mauritius visited Cal Maritime today as part of a four-week course they are taking at the Institute for Security Governance in Monterey, CA on maritime security. They met with President Cropper, toured the TS Golden Bear, met with cadets, and took a tour of the Simulation Room, among other stops.

Visitors in simulation room鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to help them build capabilities and capacity in dealing with maritime threats from anything like piracy or maritime pollution to terrorism,鈥 says Tim Doorey of the Institute for Security Governance and a retired US Navy captain, who is leading the group of visitors. 鈥淧art of what they're looking to learn is how they can professionalize their workforce with the limited resources in their countries. Their navies tend to be significantly smaller than their land forces so we're trying to help them maximize the resources and personnel by showing them how training and education works in the US. Hopefully they can take some of this back with them to their countries and implement it there on smaller scale.鈥

The visitors also included faculty members from the Institute for Security Governance.

Chair of the Global Studies and Maritime Affairs Department Professor Assis Malaquis hosted the delegation.

鈥淭his visit of senior officials and officers from around the world reaffirms Cal Maritime鈥檚 global reputation as an outstanding institution where the next generation of maritime sector leaders are educated," says Malaquis. "They have come to see with their own eyes how here at Cal Maritime we combine rigorous intellectual learning, applied technology, leadership development, and global awareness to prepare our cadets for their future careers.鈥
