(Vallejo, California – April 18, 2016) – Students from Cal Maritime will get under
way for the first of two two-month training cruises with a day of training in the
San Francisco Bay, followed by a reception in San Francisco on Sunday, April 24.
The Training Ship Golden Bear, the 500-foot training vessel of ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ (Cal
Maritime) will depart the Vallejo campus at 8:00 a.m. Sunday. Following a day of training,
a reception will be held aboard the ship from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Piers 15/17 in San
Francisco, adjacent to the Exploratorium.
The itinerary for the cruises includes transit through the Panama Canal and stops
in the Dominican Republic, Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Puerto Rico, New York, and
Charleston, South Carolina. The first cruise ends on June 22, when new crew, students
and faculty board the ship for the second cruise. The ship returns to Vallejo for
good on Sunday, August 21.
The annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime.
For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible
for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the
engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime
faculty, the ship's captain and chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners.
During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes, and intellectual learning,
applied technology, and leadership development blend daily as cadets apply what they
have learned in the classroom, in the lab, in the Corps, and on the waterfront.
