Welcome to Student Health
Physical and psychological well-being has a tremendous impact on a student's academic performance. Our mission is to provide high-quality health care and maintain the optimal health of our students by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning. We meet this goal by helping our students obtain the skills to remain healthy throughout life and enhancing their experience as a member of the academy and wider community. The Student Health Center provides confidential and easily accessible clinic-based primary care services to all Cal Maritime matriculated students.
The academy encourages students to utilize the Student Health Center for their medical needs such as urgent care (drop-in), scheduled appointments, physicals, basic lab, specialty clinics, medications prescribed by our healthcare providers and referrals to off-campus providers.
During the annual training cruise, the Cal Maritime Student Health Center relocates to the Medical Treatment Facility onboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. This facility is staffed with a Chief Medical Officer (Physician) and a Medical Officer (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) 24 hours a day for emergency care. In addition to this 24-hour, on-call service, the medical team provides a drop-in clinic twice a day while at sea and once a day while in port for students to access health care. The training ship is equipped with a basic lab, x-ray, medical commodities and pharmaceuticals to support most of the health care needs presented by students.
While on campus or at sea, the care of certain illnesses, injuries and conditions may require hospitalization or services beyond our scope of authorized care. In this incidence, a student will be referred to local medical services where utilization of their medical insurance will be essential. The Student Health Center is closed during campus holidays: New Year's, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after, and Christmas Break (last week of December).

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States.
The inclusion of Fentanyl into much of the illegally obtained drug supply has created
a new danger for those who use drugs. Even people who do not normally use opioids
may be exposed to this deadly substance. Narcan (Naloxone) is a safe and effective
drug that can reverse opioid overdoses.
Naloxone (brand name Narcan) is a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose. It
is non-addictive, has virtually no side effects and has no potential for abuse as
it does not produce any high effect. It comes in the form of a nasal spray or an injection
and is safe to give to anyone suspected of experiencing and overdose. Naloxone only
works on opioids in the brain and will have no effect on someone without opioids in
their system.
Overdose occurs when opioids cause a person to stop breathing. Naloxone works within
minutes by temporarily removing opioids from their receptors, allowing the person
to breathe again.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ) urges people to carry Naloxone
if they use opioids or spend time with someone who does.
You can get Naloxone spray and Fentanyl test strips at the Student Health Center,
Residence Life Office and the campus Police Department.
Overview
A broad range of women's health care services are provided at the SHC. Services are
available on a walk-in basis, including pregnancy testing and counseling, medication
abortion services, treatment of gynecological problems, contraception and screening/treatment
of sexually transmitted diseases. Well Woman Exams, which include Pap smear, STD check,
breast and limited physical exam are available by appointment. For further information

Birth Control Services
The Student Health Center offers birth control services and information. Female students
may receive oral contraceptives through the health center and we now offer an injectable
option. Some non-prescriptions contraceptives may be purchased at an outside pharmacy.
Free condoms and menstrual products are available in the SHC lobby and bathrooms. Free menstrual products are also available
at other restrooms throughout campus.
Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Plan B)
Following unprotected intercourse, go to Student Health Center, another medical provider
or participating California pharmacy as soon as possible & within 72 hours. (Taking
Plan B mal help prevent pregnancy if taken up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse,
but ASAP is more effective). Get more information at 1-888-NOT-2-LATE.
Pregnancy Testing
This test is available for female students and is covered as part of the student health
fee. Pregnancy testing is available by walk-in appointment and does not require a
visit with a provider.
A medication abortion is the use of medicine to end an undesired pregnancy. The medicine
helps remove the fetus and placenta from the woman's womb (uterus). Medication abortion
is also called the abortion pill. Medication abortion services are available up to
10 weeks gestation.
To ensure that you receive timely care, please contact the SHC at 707 654 1170 to
schedule an appointment for pregnancy testing or pregnancy options.
Available to patients up to 10 weeks gestation (70 days from your last menstrual period). Patients can expect to have two in-person appointments at the Health Center, plus follow up care. The first appointment is a nurse visit to confirm the pregnancy with lab tests, The second appointment will be a consultation with a medical provider to discuss pregnancy and/or abortion options.
