(Vallejo, California – June 12, 2017) – Cal Maritime's Cadet-Community Connection is looking for volunteer hosts for this year's program. Hosts and their families provide friendship and connection to Cal Maritime cadets who may be away from home for the first time in their lives.

"The program has been great for cadets and volunteers alike," said Greg Carter, co-founder of the Boyz under the Hood Classic Car Club. "My friend and I signed up as a team, and we requested a cadet who was interested in classic cars. Our cadets were able to join us on weekends when their studies allowed, and we taught them to work on cars, showed them around town, and took them to breakfast and dinner. We remained in contact with their parents, keeping them up-to-date on their sons' and daughter's progress in school. It's been a fun experience."

Hosts are asked to submit to a background check and attend a training session. Dates and times are available at the website below.

A meet and greet event will be held on campus on Wednesday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m.

"We ask that our hosts have at least one personal interaction with their cadet per month," said JoEllen Myslik, the program coordinator. "Hosts stay connected throughout the cadets' freshman year – additional years are encouraged, but completely optional. We feel it's a great way for our cadets to become more familiar with Vallejo and the surrounding area, and also for members of the community to engage with the campus."

Applications are being accepted through July 31. Applicants must be 28 years of age and live within a 25 mile radius of the Cal Maritime campus.
