(Vallejo, California – May 1, 2019) – Students from ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ University Maritime Academy are arriving in Los Angeles on June 25 – the first stop on a two-month training cruise aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. This year, the cadets will sail the 500-foot vessel through the Panama Canal and to Barbados, Portugal, and Ponta Delgada, Azores before returning to the U.S. with stops in Florida and Texas.

The ship will arrive at Pier 46 in Long Beach in the evening on May 6 and depart at 8:00 a.m. on May 8.

On May 7 at 11:00 a.m., the Golden Bear will be engaged in a demonstration of technology that utilizes drones to monitor ship emissions. The drones are equipped with sensors that can measure the sulphur content of the fuel which is being burned. Sulphur in shipping fuel is regulated by IMO, the International Maritime Organization. New requirements will come on line in 2020.

Cal Maritime's annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum for students majoring in marine transportation and engineering at Cal Maritime. For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the engines, and maintaining the vessel.

All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime faculty, the ship's captain, the chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners. During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes and apply what they have learned in the classroom, in the lab, on the waterfront, and as members of the Academy's Corps of Cadets.
