As part of orientation, the Oceanography program spent an overnight aboard the tall ship Matthew Turner (Call of the Sea) departing from Sausalito, and spending two days sailing and learning about marine science in the San Francisco Bay. More information can be found about the ship Matthew Turner at the Call of the Sea website. .

While on board, OCN cadets continued to build friendships with fellow cadets and had the opportunity to interact with their OCN and other science faculty who also participated. Cadets took part in team-building skills while sailing the schooner, and were able to go aloft in the rigging. Each cadet stood watch overnight as we sat on anchor. Some highlights were a chance to operate a small remotely operated vehicle (ROV), set a manta trawl to collect plastic debris and a plankton net to study phytoplankton and zooplankton in the lab. Students also learned about ocean acidification, caused by increasing carbon dioxide emissions.
For many of our OCN cadets, this trip was a first experience aboard a sailing vessel (or perhaps any boat) and a first chance to experience the ecosystems that they will study during their time at Cal Maritime. As part of our time together we set professional and personal goals for the upcoming year.
