天美视频 welcomed high school students and teachers from across northern and central California to campus on February 8 to compete in the 2025 Sea Lion Bowl, a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The exciting, daylong event brought together nine teams that competed for a spot in the NOSB National Finals in May 2025.

Now in its second year at Cal Maritime, the Sea Lion Bowl is one of 24 regional science bowls open to high schools throughout northern and central California.  This year鈥檚 teams traveled from as far away as San Jose and Sacramento.   The competition tested students鈥 knowledge across a wide range of ocean topics, including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, technology, and policy. Teams participated in round-robin and single-elimination rounds, with the winning team advancing to the national level. This event provides an invaluable opportunity for students, teachers, and families to engage with ocean sciences while increasing public awareness about the importance of ocean research and education.

鈥淭he Sea Lion Bowl is a great opportunity for students to explore the world of ocean science and demonstrate their knowledge and teamwork,鈥 said Alex Parker, professor of oceanography and Interim Dean of the School of Letters and Sciences at Cal Maritime. 鈥淲e are thrilled to host the event, share our waterfront campus with our guests, and help foster the next generation of leaders in ocean research and policy.鈥

The winning team from Lynbrook High School in San Jose, will advance to the NOSB National Finals, where they will compete against the nation鈥檚 top high school teams. The NOSB is managed by the Center for Ocean Leadership in partnership with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Community Program. The competition is made possible through the generous support of various sponsor agencies and organizations committed to advancing ocean education.

The event would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers, including scientists, educators, students, and other community members, who generously contributed their time and expertise to make the Sea Lion Bowl a success this year.
