On deck there was a lot of activity, some cadets were taking ballast water soundings and taking MEOD soundings. This process is time consuming, however it is very important to know the levels in all of the tanks. This is for the stability of the vessel so not only the ride is smooth, but to ensure the safety of the vessel. The MEOD soundings are important to see the level of fuel on board.

In the engine room there was a lot going on, as always there is the MEOD watches and fuel oil transfers, but there was other stuff going on as well. Some cadets were in the machine shop working on parts that needed repairs or were fabricating new small parts if needed. Some were wiping oil off areas that should not have oil on them, this is a constant battle and takes a lot of time to do. Others were checking the oil levels in vital equipment to ensure they have enough to operate.

Even though there were clouds in the sky and we were met with rain this morning, everyone was in a good mood with the celebrations planned for later in the day. For many this will be the first 4th of July away from home. Even though we might be 1800 miles away from our families we are glad we are with some great company on ship.
