Maritime Informatics is underway at Cal Maritime!

Maritime Informatics merges maritime subject material with modern data processing tools such as Python and ChatGPT鈥檚 application program interface. Current initiatives within the global Maritime Informatics space include vessel tracking, fleet management, and sustainability initiatives.

The purpose of Cal Maritime's Maritime Informatics class is to prepare license-track students to meet the demand for maritime subject matter experts (MSMEs) within the maritime informatics space, which is growing at a 20 percent compounded annual growth rate.

Shown with cadets Reef and Amann is Christian Lau, co-founder of DynamoFL, who recently closed a Series A fundraiser of $15 million.

"Our students are preparing for the new reality of today鈥檚 high-tech, interconnected maritime industry," said Steve Browne, dean of the School of Maritime Transportation, Logistics, and Management. "This new course will equip these 21st century mariners with the 21st century skills that they will need to succeed in their careers. Marine Transportation Professor Jordan Taylor and our outstanding faculty here at Cal Maritime are doing really great work and giving our students a cutting-edge maritime education."

The class merges problem solving, teamwork, and cutting-edge technical skills which are among the top attributes that employers are searching for with college graduates. It was developed with the help and encouragement of Dean Browne, Capt. Tamara Burback, and Graduate Director Kathy Arnold.

In addition to regular lectures, the class seeks to obtain industry collaboration. Another trip is being planned to Github in San Francisco during the month of February.

Starting Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. there will be recurring labs at the Simulation building that will help students get started in coding. All are welcome to attend.
