JED Campus Team and Activities

During the 2021-23 academic years, CSU Maritime Academy partnered with the JED Foundation to assess the mental health, suicide prevention, and substance use of cadets/students and the campus community. This page captures the activities of the JED Campus Team, which includes representatives from many divisions and departments across campus (e.g., CAPS, SHS, Residential Life, Office of the Commandant, Student Leaders, Athletics, Faculty, University Advising, and more). Healthy Minds Study - Student Survey

In spring 2023 Cal Maritime administered the , the Healthy Minds Network鈥檚 annual web-based survey study examining mental health, service utilization, and related issues among undergraduate and graduate students. Since its national launch in 2007, HMS has been fielded at over 450 colleges and universities, with over a half million survey respondents. The following is important information about the survey:

Since completing the survey we received a 25% response rate, which is a strong representation that will be informative for programs and efforts moving forward. The local data summary will be shared in teh future along with comparative baseline information from HMS.

The JED Campus Team is offering JED campuses access to programs from . Foundation SKY Campus Happiness is a comprehensive well-being and resilience program designed to help students, faculty and staff achieve their fullest potential.

Mariner Mental Health

This year鈥檚 annual Mariner Mental Health event (10/14/22) was entitled, with Dr. Laura Torres-Reyes, MD, MPH, USAF (Ret.), Medical Evaluation Division Chief at the U.S. Coast Guard鈥檚 National Maritime Center. Designed to educate and destigmatize the licensing health review process, this event was attended by over 80 cadets both online and in person. Moderated by Capt. Tamara Burback, MT Department Chair, the session included a presentation and questions from the moderator.

Policy

  • Health Leave Policy draft moving toward approval.
  • Additional policies being revised or developed: Medical transport, Parental/Emergency notification.

Training and Response

  • Incorporating consistent response protocol and information for students of concern across trainings on campus.
  • Implementing signature mental health support training ( from the Jed Foundation) across campus.

CAPS/SHS and Help-Seeking

  • New CAPS infographics and posters highlighting important messages about mental health.
  • Collaboration between Student Health and Campus PD on safety response protocol for opioid misuse.

Social Connectedness

  • Planning activities at the Inclusion Center, such as a workshop series based on gender socialization led by Confidential Advocate Maddie Hammill
  • Health and wellness information shared with parents and supporters of incoming cadets and at family weekend.

Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

  • Housing and Residential Life staff to provide education and information to cadets through new 1:1 meetings between RHOs and cadets.
  • Online Assessments for mental health and substance use available to cadets.
