Fulfilled Requirement
Students meeting any of the following criteria fulfill first-year GE requirements
for either written communication and/or math/quantitative reasoning and may enroll
directly in next-level courses as required by their major:
English
- Score 3: AP / exam
- Earn minimum C-: College-level Area A2 Written Communication
Math/Quantitative Reasoning (Non-STEM & STEM Majors)
- Score 3: AP Calculus or // exam
- Score 50: CLEP ///
- Score 4: International Baccalaureate
- Earn minimum C-: College-level Area B4 Quantitative Reasoning
Enroll in GE Coursework
Students meeting any of the following criteria demonstrate readiness to enroll directly
in first-year GE written communication and/or math/quantitative reasoning courses:
English
- Score 22:
- Score 19-21: and earn minimum C- for AP/Weighted Honors or in 12th Grade
- Score "Standard Exceeded": CAASPP Smarter Balanced
- Score "Standard Met": CAASPP Smarter Balanced and earn minimum C- for AP/Weighted Honors or in 12th Grade
- Score 550: SAT
- Score 510-540: SAT and earn minimum C- for AP/Weighted Honors or CSU Expository Reading & Writing in 12th Grade
- Earn 3.3 weighted high school GPA
- Earn 3.0-3.29 weighted high school GPA and earn minimum C- for AP/Weighted Honors or CSU Expository Reading & Writing in 12th Grade
- Earn 3.0 weighted high school GPA and complete 5+ years of high school English
Math/Quantitative Reasoning (Non-STEM Majors)

- Score 20-22: and earn minimum C- for fourth year of math beyond Algebra 2/Integrated Math III in 12th

- Score "Standard Nearly Met": CAASPP Smarter Balanced
- Score 510-540: SAT and complete 4 years of high school English
- Earn 3.0-3.29 weighted high school GPA and complete 4 years of high school English
Supportive Instruction @ Cal Maritime
Enroll in year-long EGL 101 and 102 "stretch" course
Math/Quantitative Reasoning (Non-STEM Majors)
- Score "Standard Nearly Met": CAASPP Smarter Balanced (no additional preparation)
- Earn 3.0-3.49 weighted high school GPA (no additional preparation)
- Earn 3.3-3.69 weighted math GPA (no additional preparation)

Enroll in MTH 100 College Algebra & Trigonometry and MTH 99L lab

California residents admitted as first-year CSU students but not demonstrating readiness
via approved multiple measures may still enroll in GE written communication and/or
math/quantitative reasoning courses upon the condition of completing supportive instruction
and the Early Start Program.
Non-residents/international students and students participating in EOP Summer Bridge
do not participate in the Early Start Program, but must fulfill supportive instruction
if placed in readiness category III or IV for English and/or math.
Supportive Instruction @ Cal Maritime
English: Enroll in year-long EGL 101 and 102 "stretch" course
Math: Enroll in MTH 100 College Algebra & Trigonometry and MTH 99L lab
Early Start Program
The Early Start Program prepares California residents admitted as first-year CSU students
placed in readiness category IV for English and/or math to succeed academically in
GE written communication and/or math/quantitative reasoning.
Non-residents/international students and students participating in EOP Summer Bridge
do not participate in the Early Start Program, but must fulfill supportive instruction
if placed in readiness category IV for English and/or math.
By enrolling in at a CSU campus of their choice during the summer prior to their first fall term,
students improve their chances of successfully earning baccalaureate degrees.
