Yes.  Every session of Orientation is mandatory for all  cadets, including transfer cadets and veterans. The sessions included in Orientation have been designed to help you become a Cal Maritime Cadet. It takes more to be a Cal Maritime Cadet than it does to be a traditional college student and we want to make sure you have everything you need to be successful.

Cal Maritime offers a virtual Parent/Family Orientation program over summer. It is highly recommended, not mandatory.  Zoom Sessions on various topics are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August. 5:30-6:30pm. Zoom Link:
Parents and families will also have the opportunity to meet campus professionals at the Cmapus Services Fair, learn more about what it means to be a cadet, and participate in the Capping Ceremony on Move-In Day.

There are quite a few hotels in the area, but nothing super close to campus. We recommend the Marriott Vallejo Napa Valley, Courtyard Vallejo Napa Valley, Holiday Inn Express Benicia, Double Tree Hotel & Spa Napa Valley, Fairfield Inn & Suites Napa Valley.

More information on accommodations

Parking permits will either be not required during orientation days or a permit will be provided by the campus.  If you have a handicapped permit, you will need to bring this in order to park in the designated handicapped spaces.

Parking is limited and there will be a sufficient campus police presence to help with traffic flow. There may be free shuttles running all day to the main parts of campus to help everyone get where they need to be. Specifically for Housing check-in, vehicles will not be allowed to the Residence Hall parking lots until the  cadet's designated check in time. There will be student leaders present to help unload the vehicles at the residence hall and get your belongings to your room.

Once cadets move into their respective residence hall, they are required to remain on campus. This helps cadets be ready for an early start the following day. Being in your residence hall also gives cadets an opportunity to meet their fellow classmates before jumping into a hectic Orientation program.

In case of delays while traveling, text 707-718-707 or email orientation@csum.edu at your earliest.

Though it is important to keep all scheduled appointments, in case of delays, prioritize Housing check-in, followed by the Swim Assessment, and finally, uniform pick up. For assistance, talk to a Cadet Leader or staff member.

Yes.  Read more about the Swim Assessment.  Don't forget to keep that swim suit handy when packing!

No worries! If you do not pass the Swim Assessment, you will automatically be enrolled in a swim class.  If you are majoring in Engineering or Marine Transportation, you must pass either the Swim Assessment or swim class before you can register for Marine Survival course, which is a pre-requisite for TSGB Cruise.

As you plan for your arrival at Cal Maritime, please note that only Service Animals are allowed in buildings. We welcome animals outside who are on a leash, but bringing your dog for one last goodbye may provide some challenges!

We've got you covered!  All incoming cadets are pre-registered for their classes at Cal Maritime.  You will meet with your Academic Department Chair and Advisor during Orientation and will have the opportunity to adjust your schedule once classes have started.
